Annapolis First Sunday Arts Festival branding and outdoor signage

First Sunday Arts Festival outdoor signage

Festival logo by jebdesign.comJEB Design is happy to announce the new logo and branding for the largest monthly street festival in Annapolis, Maryland. The identity has been in development for a couple of months and this Sunday, September 2, will be the first time all the outdoor signage and banners will be on display. We hope you can make it over to Calvert and West Street (near Rams Head) to enjoy the First Sunday Arts Festival.

Facebook branding for Arts FestivalThe logo development is a large part of the creative process in building a successful brand. From time to time, we like to showcase the "behind the scenes" of that graphic design journey. The First Sunday Arts Festival involved 6 rounds of refinement to reach the approved logo. In the image below, we highlight some of the previous rounds that the committee reviewed. You can see the evolution of the logo and how we reached the final logo.

New branding for Annapolis Film Festival's Shorts Film Crawl

JEB Design helps brand the Annapolis Film Festival! Working with the logo provided by Herrmann Advertising, we were asked to develop the graphic illustrations and promotional posters. A short film crawl this September is aimed at raising awareness about the event, as well as funds. It will be similar to a pub crawl which involves stops at various Annapolis venues for about 30 minutes of movies, hors d'oeuvres and drinks over a four-hour period. Season finale of HBO's "VEEP" ended with full view of Joe Barsin's "Sails" poster.

After numerous partial sightings of the "Sails" poster on the set of HBO's "VEEP", we were treated to a full view in the season's finale (aired after "True Blood", June 10, 2012) . It looks like it even got a standing ovation, or maybe that is our ego talking. Looking forward to next season!

HBO series, "VEEP", features Joe Barsin's art on the set.

The hilarious new series, "VEEP", staring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is using Joe Barsin's "Annapolis Sails" poster as part of their permanent set.

Shown here are some screen captures taken from the third episode of "VEEP" (aired May 6, 2012). The series has already been picked up for a second season on HBO so there will be lots of opportunities for more "Sails" sightings.

We want to thank the Annapolis Visitors Bureau (AAACCVB), for contacting us over a year ago. They were tasked by the "VEEP" set designers to locate a dynamic poster to represent Annapolis, Maryland. We sent the poster up last January to the Baltimore set, where it is filmed, and have been wondering ever since whether it would be used or not. It was exciting to learn our answer when we spotted it last night while watching! An interesting side note, we rewatched the first 2 espisodes to see why it wasn't in those and noticed soemthing very cool. The set designers are so good that they slowly built the set in the first shows to convey the moving-in process for the Vice President. If you look really hard, you will see the framed poster on the floor, waiting to be hung.

Graphic Design in Spain - "Olé!"

One of our favorites from the 1996 Bull Fighting seasonOn our recent trip to Spain we were inspired by numerous graphic signage displaying effective logos, logotypes and illustrations. Many of them featured handcrafted artwork including painting, woodcuts and mosaic tiles.

Graphic Design has been around since the caveman with pictograms, then developed to the first alphabet, hieroglyphs and cuneiform. Around 9000 B.C., it began to develop into a logographic writing system, which 4000 years later, led to one of the more influential aspects of graphic design, ideograms. The effectiveness of ideograms in graphic design lies within their ability to appeal universally across cultural differences and language barriers.

Beginning in the late 15th century, typeface designs evolved into what we call now as Old Style types, which were inspired by capital letters found in ancient Roman inscriptions and by lowercase letters found in manuscript writing from the Carolingian period. The variety of typefaces we saw in Spain was amazing!

Bullfighting is a controversial sport and we respect its tradition. We can't help to recognize that it is a very spectacular sight. It is a powerful scene that reminds us of the tragic operas. Each year since bullfighting began, one featured poster design was created to advertise the bullfighting schedule. Pablo Picasso, Ramon Casas, Miquel Barceló  and Francisco de Goya were among some of the more famous artists/designers who created posters.

Like us on Facebook and see more! We placed over 20 addtional spanish signage images on our Facebook page.
